Brick Pointing in Palmdale CA - Sound Joints Where the Old Mortar Failed
Mortar crumbling, cracked or sunk back between your bricks? We cut out the failing joints and repack them, leaving the sound ones alone.

When does brick pointing make sense? For Palmdale homes and rentals

If the mortar between your bricks has sunk back, crumbled or cracked, that's where water gets in. Brick pointing in Palmdale, which some folks call tuckpointing, means we cut out the bad mortar and pack in new mortar so it bonds well, and it's one of the best ways to keep moisture out of a brick wall.
I'll walk the wall with you and point out the joints that are actually failing, because sound original mortar is better left alone than redone, and repointing takes a lot of labor. That way you pay for the joints that need work, and the good ones stay just as they are.
The price and the schedule mostly come down to how many joints are failing, how high the wall goes and whether older brick calls for slower hand work. The schedule also turns on whether the office that covers your address wants a permit, and I'll put your number in a written estimate.
You can count on a straight answer about which joints need work and which don't, so give us a call at (661) 382-3390.
What brick pointing covers at your house
We match the work to the wall in front of us, from the mortar to the tools, so a chimney, a garden wall and an older house each get what they need.
Worn and cracked joints
Joints that are worn back, crumbling or cracked let water in, so we clean them out and pack in new mortar. Cracks that keep coming back can mean a foundation repair problem.
Older and historic brick
On historic brick, the guidance is mortar no stronger than the original, because harder mortar makes the brick face flake off. We lean on hand tools there so the edges don't chip.
Chimney joints
We repoint chimney joints the same careful way, failing joints only. If bricks are loose or broken, that's a chimney repair job, and I'll tell you which one you need.

From call to walkthroughHow a pointing job runs
I keep it simple. You talk with me from the first visit to the final look, and what we're doing is in writing before we cut a single joint.
You call or send the form
Call (661) 382-3390 or use the form with your address, and we'll set a time for me to come out and look at the wall with you.
I walk the wall with you
I mark the failing joints and check which office covers your address. Your written estimate follows, and I'll tell you how deep we'll clean each joint and which tools we'll use.
Getting the wall ready
Once you say go, our masons protect the ground below the wall and clean out each marked joint to the depth we talked about, so the new mortar has something to grab.
Repointing the joints
The masons pack new mortar into the joints and finish them to match the rest of the wall, and I'm on site checking the work as it goes.
Looking it over together
When the last joint is done, we walk the wall together so you can see the work up close and ask me anything you want about it.
Brick pointing questions we hear
How do I know my brick mortar needs repointing?
Your mortar needs repointing when it's worn back more than ¼ inch from the brick face, crumbling, missing in spots, or showing hairline cracks or gaps where it meets the brick. Those are the joints where moisture gets into a brick wall, so they're the ones to fix first. Send a few photos and I'll tell you what I'm seeing.
Does the whole wall need new mortar if only a few joints are cracked?
No, only the failing joints need repointing, and original joints still in good shape are better left alone than redone. Preservation guidance also says a surface grout wiped over the wall can't stand in for real repointing and isn't recommended on historic brick, so we cut out the bad joints instead.
Who can do brick pointing work in California?
California lets someone without a contractor license take on small jobs only under a $1,000 limit, raised from $500, and only when the work needs no permit and they don't employ anyone on it. Past that, you want a licensed contractor, and brick industry guidance adds that repointing takes its own skill, so even an excellent mason may not be the right person. Ask to see their repointing work before you choose.
How long does mortar last on a brick house?
Mortar lasts roughly 25 to 50 years, according to one masonry trade group, while the brick itself lasts about 100 years or more. That's why a sound brick wall still needs its joints repointed from time to time.
How much does brick pointing cost in Palmdale?
Your price comes from how many joints are actually failing rather than the size of the wall, and I put it in a written estimate after looking at it with you. Since we only touch the bad joints, a wall with a handful of them costs far less than one failing all over, and ladder or scaffold work, how deep we cut and matching the mortar color move it too.
Do I need a permit for brick pointing in Palmdale?
I check that for your address before we start, because the answer comes from whichever office covers your property. Some homes with a Palmdale mailing address sit in unincorporated Los Angeles County, outside the city, and inside city limits Palmdale Building and Safety takes permit questions at 661-267-5353. When a job needs a permit, we handle the application and set up the inspections.
