Most of the masonry restoration we do in Palmdale starts with mortar that's crumbling, cracked or sinking back from the face of the brick. The fix is repointing. We rake out the worn mortar and pack the joints with new mortar, so the brick or block stays tight and keeps shedding water.

Before any new mortar goes in, I look for whatever is soaking the wall, like a leaky downspout or a sprinkler that hits it every morning, and we fix that first. Otherwise the fresh joints wash out the same way the old ones did, and you end up paying for the same repair twice.

The price moves with how many joints are actually failing, how big and tall the wall is, how easy it is to reach and whether there's a drainage fix to make first. Those same things set the schedule, and you'll get your own figure in the written estimate after I walk the wall with you.

You can count on a straight answer about which joints need work and which ones don't, so give us a call at (661) 382-3390.

Masonry restoration for brick and block walls

Brick, block and the mortar between them wear differently, so we look at what your wall is built from before we pick our tools, how deep we rake and how the new joints get finished.

  • Brick walls and house fronts

We clear out the crumbling mortar without chipping the brick edges, then pack in new mortar and tool it to match the joints around it.

  • Concrete block walls

Yard and garden walls of block often crack along the mortar lines. We repoint those joints and show you any crack that runs through the block itself.

  • Fireplace brick and stone faces

Worn joints on a brick fireplace or a stone-faced wall get repointed the same careful way. If you'd rather build new, that's our fireplace installation or stone veneer installation work.

How a repointing job runsfrom your call to the walkthrough

You'll have one person to ask about your wall from start to finish, and a written estimate that shows what we're repointing before anyone picks up a tool.

  1. You call or send the form

Call (661) 382-3390 or fill out the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time for me to come see the wall.

  2. I look at the wall with you

I walk the wall with you, show you which joints are failing and what's soaking them, check which office covers your address and put the estimate in writing.

  3. We fix the water first

Once you say go, we sort out the drainage problem I showed you, then rake the failing joints out clean so the new mortar has something solid to hold onto.

  4. Our masons repoint the joints

Our masons pack and tool the new mortar joint by joint, and I'm on site checking the work as it goes so nothing gets rushed.

  5. We look it over together

When the joints are done, we clean up and walk the finished wall with you, so you can see every repaired joint and ask whatever's on your mind.

Questions about repointing

How do I know if my brick wall needs repointing?

Your joints need repointing when the mortar has worn back more than 1/4 inch, is crumbling, has gaps or holes in it, or is cracked or pulling away from the brick. Sound original joints hold up better than repointed ones, so we repoint the failing joints and leave the good ones alone.

Can new mortar damage old brick?

Yes, mortar that's harder than the original can damage the brick in ways that can't be repaired, so the new mix should be about as strong as the old one or weaker. It also has to let moisture work its way out of the wall, or the bricks and blocks take the damage instead. Ask me, or any mason you're talking to, how their mortar compares with yours.

How long do mortar joints last on a brick wall?

Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, while the bricks themselves can last more than 100. That means a sound wall may need repointing more than once in its life, and that's normal upkeep, not a sign something went wrong.

Does a contractor need a license to repoint brick in California?

The state licensing board lets someone without a license take a job of up to $1,000, and only when the work needs no permit and they don't have anyone working for them on it. Past that, you want a licensed contractor, so ask before anyone starts on your wall.

How much does masonry restoration cost in Palmdale?

The cost comes down mostly to how many joints are failing, because repointing is slow hand work done joint by joint. A wall with a few bad patches costs far less than one that needs every joint redone, and a drainage fix or a tall wall that's hard to reach adds to it. I'll give you your own number in writing after I see the wall.

Can cracks in a concrete block wall be fixed with repointing?

Usually, yes, when the cracks are limited, run mostly through the mortar joints and aren't getting any wider, because standard repointing handles those well. If a crack cuts through the blocks or keeps opening, I'll tell you so at the estimate, since that's a different repair.
